Colgate Total is a Complete Toothpaste
Colgate makes a very good toothpaste. Total has both a desensitizer and a tartar-control agent in it. Some people have problems with tartar build-up and this is a good toothpaste to use for tartar control. In addition, this toothpaste has the ADA seal of approval, has fluoride to help strenthen enamel, and has low abrasiveness. All in all, it is a very acceptable toothpaste. If you do not want all the extra additives (some people are sensitive to the ingredients), then try: Colgate Cavity Protection Toothpaste Great Regular Flavor, Stand Up Tube - 6 Oz
With all the positives going for it, why only 4 stars? Colgate Total lacks Xylitol.
Xylitol is a natural sweetener that the human body (and bacteria) cannot metabolize. Thus, there is no extra sugar for diabetics, and there is no sugar for the bacteria in the mouth. What is even better, is that bacteria ingest Xylitol and since they cannot metabolize it, they die off, thus lowering the amount of pathogenic bacteria in the mouth. There are several toothpastes that have Xylitol in them, but the leader in the field is Spry toothpaste with fluoride: Xlear Spry Spearmint Toothpaste with Xylitol (With Fluoride), 4 Ounces As a dental professional, I have been recommending Spry with fluoride as the toothpaste of choice. Spry will also leave your mouth tasting and smelling good. I recommend that people brush 3-4 times a day. If you brush 4 times a day, and do not want to give up your Colgate (for it is a good toothpaste) brush with Spry twice and Colgate twice. If you only brush twice a day alternate Spry and Colgate.
Spry also makes a chewing gum that has Xylitol in it that you can chew mid-morning and mid-afternoon (between brushings), and you still get the benefit of Xylitol: Spry Spearmint Xylitol Chewing Gum 100 Count

Great Product Innovation; Look At Other Sizes
For years, Crest was the toothpaste of choice. It had a dominating market share, due in large part to the fact that Crest was the first toohpaste to obtain the ADA (American Dental Association) seal of approval. The marketplace went through a seismic shift with the introduction of Colgate Total. Colgate proved once again that a market leader that grows complacent is vulnerable to an innovative competitor. The innovation: Triclosan, which actually makes your mouth fight bacteria longer and, more importantly, makes your mouth FEEL cleaner. You should look at the 7.8 ounce version, rather than this 6 ounce version, because of the value in the 7.8 ounce version. As to the "Plus Whitening", the Whitening element doesn't work as well as, say, Crest Whitening Strips; but it is better than nothing, and there is no significant price difference if you buy the version without "Plus Whitening."This is a good product that shook the industry.
